Project Description

The NOPs facility replaced the nearly 50-year-old units with state-of-the-art technology, exemplifying modern engineering and commitment to the community. By providing reliable power with a reduced environmental footprint, NOPS is integral to the city's energy strategy and resilience against natural disasters, reflecting the shared vision of the community and regulators for a sustainable energy future.

NOPS was built to meet New Orleans' power needs with minimal environmental impact, featuring seven Wärtsilä 128 MW engines with self-start capability. It can generate up to 128 MW during blackouts, ensuring local power, especially when transmission lines are down during storms. Reciprocating engine technology provides flexibility and rapid response to demand fluctuations, making it effective during summer peaks and hurricanes and boosting regional power resilience.

EXCEL played a pivotal role in the project, installing the massive engines, each weighing 642,206 lbs (321 tons). These engines were installed using the innovative Jack-and-Slide method in the newly constructed building, marking a milestone in modern engineering.

EXCEL also managed the installation of structural steel, piping, equipment, painting, insulation, and scaffolding. Their efforts ensured a seamless startup, with the commissioning of piping systems crucial for the station's operations. The power station began commercial operations on May 31, 2020, marking a new chapter in providing dependable electricity for New Orleans and representing a significant achievement in the city's ongoing efforts to improve energy reliability.
